De-Cluttering Thoughts

We all desire to live a happy fulfilled life. In order to really experience this gift of life, it is important to live as fully in the moment as possible. In order to do this we need to make room. I have talked before about de-cluttering “things” that are blocking us from new experiences, but today I want to talk about “thoughts” that are creating blocks in our lives.

We all have that voice in our heads that never stops talking. Most of these thoughts are repeated over and over in our minds every day, all day long. They are taking up space in our lives and blocking & distracting us from living life fully. Similar to the process of getting rid of “things”, the first step to eliminating obsessive thinking is to recognize all these thoughts that we are holding onto.

Here is a first step that you can try to start clearing to make room for fully embracing each moment in life:

Pay attention to your thoughts. Be the observer of the thoughts. If you find this difficult, try this trick: Think of yourself as someone standing in a doorway and listening to a conversation that’s happening in a room (only it's happening your in your mind). By doing this, you are making some space from your thinking mind and just observing it. You will notice that many of your thoughts are unnecessary. They are either stating fact after fact that you already know - Like “There’s Paula. She’s the lady who brought those yummy cookies last time. Those were good cookies. I wonder if she brought more. Maybe I should have brought cookies. People probably would like me better if I did.”. It goes on and on and on - you know what I'm talking about . Or your thoughts are obsessing about the past - “I wish I had not said that to Jamie. She’s probably really upset with me now and won’t talk to me. I remember that time Joe stopped talking to me. It was awful.” It goes on and on and on - you know what I'm talking about. Or your thoughts are worrisome about future events that have not even happened – “What if it rains on our vacation? That will be really awful! We won’t be able to enjoy ourselves outside. We will probably all start fighting because we will be stuck inside.”. It goes on and on and on - you know what I'm talking about. None of these thoughts are useful and in fact are blocking you from enjoying the present moment and this gift of life.

By practicing this thought observing, you become aware that you are aware of what is going on in your mind. You will start to live life more consciously and enjoy each moment fully. This creates happiness and fulfillment in this gift of life.
